Unhappy Can't load ipw3945 driver on redhat 9

I have a ThinkPad R60, with redhat 9 installed. Kernel is upgraded to 2.6.16.1.

I am installing driver for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Adapter.

The driver can be loaded by running "modprobe ipw3945", but the card does't work. And "dmesg |grep -i ipw" gives the following message:

Code:
ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, 1.2.16
ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation <jketreno@linux.intel.com>
ipw3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Network Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.2d
ipw3945: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:03:00.0 to 64
ipw3945: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
ipw3945: ipw3945.ucode load failed: Reason -2
ipw3945: Could not read microcode: -2
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:03:00.0 disabled
ipw3945: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -2
"#/sbin/ipw3945d" gives the following error message:
Code:
ipw3945d - regulatory daemon
Copyright (C) 2005-2006 Intel Corporation. All rights reserved.
version: 1.7.22
2008-02-03 17:34:09: ERROR: Could not find Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
"# /sbin/iwconfig eth1" gives the following message:
Code:
eth1 No such device

Here is my installation steps, following the documentation provided in package ipw3945-1.2.2:
Code:
1. Install ieee80211 subsystems
% tar xzvf ieee80211-1.2.16.tgz
	% cd ieee80211-1.2.16
	% make
	# make install
2. Install ipw3945-1.2.2
        % tar xzvf ipw3945-1.2.2.tgz
	% cd ipw3945-1.2.2
	# make; make install

3. Install the firmware files
        #cp ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2/ipw3945.ucode /lib/firmware

4. Install dameon
        # cp ipw3945d-1.7.22/x86/ipw3945d /sbin
Can anyone help me out?

Thank you so much!

If you upgrade to the .23 rather than .16 kernel you will have an easier time.

Thank you for your help, I will try it

But, is there any idea of solving the problem without upgrading my kernel?

How about installing a modern Linux distro instead of dead one? There has been lots of development in Linux world after RH 9 was released. Why miss out on all new features? Why use a distro which has no security updates - RH 9 is so old even support for it is dropped?
