Okay,
Well I'm using Debian and I used the dpkg-reconfigure tool to set my xfree settings... but my resolution was stuck at 1280x960 for some reason wich caused nasty artifacts around text etc. I also tried setting it manually in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, wich didn't seem to work as well.
When I posted my question I suddenly thought it might be good to have posted my XF86Config file as well so I started copying. Then I saw that the horizontal sync and vertical sync somehow ended up wrongly in this file...
Edited them by hand putting the official manufacturers values there and saved the file, and after a full reboot (down to init 2 and back to 5 should also work I guess, as long as the X server is restarted) the problem was fixed!
Here is the relevant part of my XF86Config-4 file:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 24-80
VertRefresh 49-75
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Hope this helps... otherwise you might try posting your own situation and problem and we could try work it out... after two weeks of fighting with linux I've seen a lot of config files hehe. But hey! That is what makes it fun!
Regards,
Bjorn
