Can't get HP scanjet 4200C to work with Mandriva 2006

I have been trying all nite to get my HP Scanjet 4200C to work, but with no success.
I am running 1.0.16-5mdk backend and 1.0.13-2mdk frontend on Mandriva 2006. My scanner is supposed to be supported since it shows up in the list.

When I enter add new scanner it searches for devices, and it finds two devices that have no description, and one IR transmitter. Since they don't have names, I don't know which one to use. I tried setting up both, but neither worked. Anyway, I try to add the scanner manually and I am asked me for the scanner model. I pick HP 4200C. I am then asked where it's connected, and I select "Auto-detect all ports". It finds it, or something, on "libusb:001:006()" and I press OK. It says it's configured, but it's not detected in Xsane or Kooka. It doesn't show up in the list in the control center either. I was able to connect to a scanner on a remote machine, so I know sane works. If I run
$/sbin/chkconfig --list
I get
acpi
acpid
alsa
anacron
atd
bluetooth
crond
cups
dkms
dm
dund
freshclam
haldaemon
harddrake
hidd
httpd
iptables

numlock
oki4daemon
pand
partmon
pg_autovacuum
portmap
postfix
rawdevices
routed
shorewall
smb
sound
syslog
xfs
xinetd

If I run
$ /proc/bus/usb/devices
this is part of the output:
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=02 Cnt=03 Dev#= 5 Spd=12 MxCh= 0

If also tried:
$ sane-find-scanner -q

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x0609 [SMK], product=0x031d [eHome Infrared Transceiver]) at libusb:001:003

I unplugged the scanner to verify that it's the second entry that's the scanner I am interested in. Not sure what the other ones are.
I also tried:
$ /sbin/modprobe scanner vendor=03f0 product=0105
but that returned:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
[root@borabora eikeland]# /sbin/modprobe scanner vendor=03f0 product=0105
FATAL: Module scanner not found.

Any suggestions?

firstly 2006 is old...we are close to 2008.1.

2) try http://hp4200-backend.sourceforge.net/
but note the warnings here
http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-hp4200.5.html

3) or try a 2008 rpm
http://www.rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/ma...008.0.src.html

Can't boot to Mandriva 2008 after upgrading from 2006

I know 2006 is old, but it works. I tried 2007, but there were too many things that didn't work, so I installed 2006 again.

The Sane packages you list first are older than the ones I have.
I looked at the 2008 rpms, but they were not much newer. I don't think it's Sane that's the issue, but Mandriva that somehow doesn't know what's connected (to the USB).

Anyway, after playing around with the Mandriva Live 2008 (it worked pretty nice), I decided to install it. Actually upgrade from 2006. However, that was a bad idea I think since now it just hangs during boot. This is why I am always a little reluctant to upgrading cause there are always some problems. Not sure why they can't figure these things out before they release them....
I did the default settings, and I see a couple of errors.
First, it fails when strting Anacron.

..... (bad exit status : 10)
Build failed. Installation skipped.
Powernow-k8: BIOS error - no PSB or ACPI_PSS objects

Then it goes along with the ip6_tables, ctnetlink

When it comes to the following, it just hangs and doesn't go any further:
CluterIP Version 0.8 loaded successfully

That's it, not more.
Any idea?

.... Upgraded to 2008 and now I can't boot

I would think I could do that, but I am more concerned about all the software I have installed and configured. Last time I did this I didn't loose any data since I have a separate partition for /home. I didn't loose any data, but I lost a lot of software etc. That's a lot of work to set up, and exactly why I am not crazy about upgrading any OS.
Mandriva is advertising that they have an "Upgrade" option, so I think they should put some more effort into making it work. It will probably be the last time I am upgrading a Mandriva version.
Having said all the bad things about Upgrading Mandriva, I have 'usually' been pretty happy with the clean installs I have had of Mandriva, with the exception of some problems with Xorg...

Since this is a much bigger problem that Sane now, I started a new post for this:

yes I see that link but will answer here to maximise your exposure to zero post repliers.

the kernel makes significant changes to each distro 2006 vs 2008 and includes issues like udev, hal, libata, sata and pata drivers. Which is why....irrespective of Upgrade options I always do a clean install.

But you know by now...some things remain the same....certain /etc/ configs like logrotate...xorg...crontab....rc.local

I had trouble installing my 4140 hp scan jet also. I had to remove all other drivers and install the latest from sourceforge. I am not at work now so I can not give you the hplip version. The most that give me trouble was getting all of the older version drivers off before it would install without an error code. There is not much support for this.

Well, the scanner shows up in the list when I try to add it, so that's what so strange about this. I won't worry too much about it for now since I have have bigger problems with the new install of 2008. I have XP install on the machine that I can use if I have (shame on me for even mentioning XP!). As far as upgrading, I think it's unfortunate that Mandriva doesn't make a bigger effort to making the Upgrade versions work. I would have been happier if they didn't offer it since I would know I only had an option to install. However, making a clean install is easier as far as keeping config files compared to Windows so that's a good thing. I also keep a separate partition for /home. I wish I had created a separate partition for /etc as well. At least I make weekly backups of /etc so I can go back and recover them. Anyway, I think I will just do a clean install and hopefull that will work.

Thanks for your replies.
