Can't Write to CD -- protocal drive?

I have installed Suse 9.2 successfully on a Dell Dimension XPS, but having some problems writing to my CD/DVD, which is:

TOSHIBA DVD ROM SD-M1212

I can read from the drive fine, but not write to it, no matter what I do -- umount, mount with -w, working from the file manager, trying to set permissions, etc.

It always something like "changing the attributes of files" or "writing to" "not supported with protocal devices". I'm new the Linux, and I don't know what protocal devices are? Does this mean I can never write to the device?

The drive you mention is a DVD/CD ROM drive.

ROM = Read Only Memory

You will never be able to write on that drive. If you would like to write data on CD/DVD, you will need to buy suitable hardware first.

Thanks for the reply. Windows used to write to that device. I also get that protocol device notice when I put a RAM-membory flash-drive into a USB port. I know this is really newbie stuff.

I think you are mixing-up your different hardware.

When we are talking about the TOSHIBA DVD ROM SD-M1212, I don't believe that Windows can write on it.

A USB memory flash-drive, yes, that is what it is made for. But you did not mention it in your 1st post. Maybe you could reprase your question and give some more detailed information about what you are trying to do.
