Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Can't use sound card after kernel rebuild

I'm fairly new to Linux, so go easy on me. I'm running Red Hat 7.3, with the 2.4.18-3 kernel on a Pentium 266. After the original installation my sound worked fine. However, after doing some reading and rebuilding the kernel (I needed to add PPP and NTFS support), my sound card is no longer working -- it's a Creative AWE64, which usually works with a generic soundblaster setup. In fact, after rebooting after the rebuild, kudzu says that both my sound card and ethernet card were removed from the system.

I tried sndconfig, which says "No PnP or PCI sound cards were found". When I use the menus to make a selection manually, it lets me choose from the es1371 or the emu10k1 cards, which both fail.

I've tried rebuilding the kernel several different ways (keeping the sound support as modular), but no luck. One thing I noticed is that sb.o was present in the original modules, but not in any of the rebuilt modules. Is that the problem?

My lspci output and a clip from dmesg are below. Any advice would be appreciated...
