Can't See My USB Hard Drive

My Debian machine will not detect my USB 2.0 external hard drive. I use this external drive for backup on my work machine (Fedora 3) but this is my 1st time hooking this up to my Debian server and when I issue the "dmesg" command, I get the following:

Code:
ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.1: wakeup
usb 2-4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
usb 2-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 2-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 2-4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
usb 2-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 2-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 2-4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
usb 2-4: device not accepting address 4, error -110
usb 2-4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
usb 2-4: device not accepting address 5, error -110
I know that the drive is formatted so it can be used on Linux or Windows. I think we used the "fdisk" utility to format the drive and selected fat32 or I don't recall exactly but this works on my office machine. Any points in the right direction?

Can be a few things.
Which kernel? Command to find out ' uname -r '
I had issues with 2.6.9 kernel and certain USB devices.

Also the usb controller is a 1.0-1.1 version. This is known since it is using ohci-hcd module. For 1.0-1.1 usb versions there are two modules, ohci-hcd and uhci-hcd. For 2.0 usb controllers it uses ehci-hcd. It is possiable the module does not work well with the controller when seeing 2.0 devices.

If you know it is suppose to have 2.0 usb controller then check to see if ehci-hcd is loaded running the command ' lsmod '. If it is listed and have a machine that has usb ports on the front and back try plugging into the other. I have seen some machones have both types of USB controllers and the manuafactors will have 2.0 at the back and 1.0-1.1 on the front ports or vice a versa.

If all else fails get a 2.0 controller and go from there. When installed make sure it loads the module ehci-hcd. If it does not then do it manually ' modprobe ehci-hcd '.
I like adaptec usb controllers. Had issues with a SIIG controller years ago. If you can find locally and still not luck you can always return it.
