Can't see files on mounted drive

I am seeing a strange problem with USB hard drives and Fedora. I mount the USB drive without problem, and then start a processes that write to it. I double-check that the files are being written to the drive and they are.

When I come back to it the next day and cd to /mnt/usb and do an 'ls', I see nothing. But the USB drive isn't unmounted and the entry in /etc/mtab is still there.

If I then umount the device, turn off the usb drive and turn it back on, and remount, I can then do an ls on /mnt/usb and see all the files. (And no, it won't remount if I don't physically turn off the usb hard drive and back on first) So then I can see the files & write to the drive again....for a while. The cycle repeats.

It's almost like the device becomes unavailable at some point, and fedora gives up on it but leaves it mounted. But I see no error messages, and the processes that are trying to write to the device don't fail with an error message. They keep running.

Any ideas what could be going on & what I can do to fix this problem?

can you post logs and dmesg so we know what is going on with the system when these things happen? Do you have an idea of how long it take before the usb drive disappears?

Am testing now to see if the amount of time before this happens is consistant. Right now it looks like it's between 1 and 3 hours.

There is no info in the logs indicating that anything is wrong... As I continue to work on this, I'll post logs if there is anything there to post!
