can't modprobe my soundcard

Redhat 8.0 kernel 2.4.20-28.8

I recently installed the alsa0.9.6 audio driver for my Realtek AC'97 sound. It seemed to work fine except I can't modprobe snd-intex8x0 . The message I get is:

init_module: no such device
...some other stuff...
insmod failed

I have an Abit SG-2 board with onboard SiS7012 chipset sound. I followed instructions for this particular setup very carefully and my sound seems to be working.

lsmod gives:

[root@cpe-67-10-65-238 alsa-utils-0.9.6]# /sbin/lsmod

If I read this correctly, my Alsa driver is working. But why can't I modprobe the card?
BTW
Before installing the Alsa, my sound played mp3's fast, about 2X regular speed so a 3 minute song lasted 2 minutes and sounded like the chipmunks. Now it plays OK, but a bit distorted at full volume.

correcting last post

typo in last post--
should read

modprobe snd-intel8x0

[root@cpe-67-10-65-238 alsa-utils-0.9.6]# modprobe snd-intel8x0
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.8/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.8/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.8/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o failed
