Can't get X with new Nvidia driver installed

root@john# uname -r
2.4.22-xfs

The motherboard is Asus A7V8X-X. The CPU is AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and the memory is Kingston PC3200 256MB.

Installed using the Knoppix v3.3 Live CD dated 09-24-2003. This is second computer and we just want Linux running on it so we can throw Microsoft's junk in the trash can.

This kernel doesn't have the Nvidia GeForce4 driver so installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-1.0-4496-pkg2.run from Nvidia site. This is how it was installed:

root@john# export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-2.95
cd into the NVIDIA file directory
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
cd //etc/X!!/XF86Config-4
removed these lines:
Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"
and added this line:
Load "glx"
changed:
Driver "nv"
to:
Driver "nvidia"
cd /etc/modutils/aliases
Add this line:
alias char-major-195 nvidia
root@john# update-modules
root@john# reboot

There was something Nvidia went to their ftp site and did something about the kernel. I don't remember, did not write it down (it happened too fast) and was all according to instructions. I searched at Google and Google/Linux and other forums and only answer is Google's and it looks like Spanish. I looked at the Spanish but can not read it. I searched in LQ forums and no thread seems like this one. Here is the error log that my system said to report for help. Sorry it's so long - just obeying the message:

i can only speak from experience with mandrake 9/9.1

when i install the nvidia drivers all i do is come out of X by
typing "telinit 3" as root
run the install thing and then change the "nv" line to "nvidia" in the
XF86Config file
then "telinit 5" to return to X
and the card works fine

(as far as i can tell)

Thanks salparadise,

First, you have a GeForce2 onboard card, not the GeForce4 8X AGP card.

Second, you don't have the same motherboard (hence totally different chipsets). You have a laptop, not a workstation.

Third, you aren't running the same Linux distribution or kernel. Mandrake is totally different from Debian.

Last, it would be nice if you wouldn't reply to threads with no previous replies when you can't help because you don't understand. When you do this, you move that thread off the Threads with no replies list.

But hey, thanks for sharing your eXPerience!

I stand corrected. You still don't have a clue about the problem, though.

maybe

but,
i made errors with the nvidia driver when i first started by following incorrect instructions

you had made 2 or 3 posts when i replied to you, for all i knew you were/are hopelessly new to linux

and none of this alters your spiteful answer first time round

if you can't be polite
don't say anything

did you even try salparadise's advise Ming Dao??
Sounds like you snapped back at him before even trying his suggestion.
I run mandrake 9.1 and I took the hard way by setting my system to boot to console instead of gui then rebooted ran the install for the nvidia kernel then ran startx to see if it worked. It would have worked had I not totally hacked my kernel, so now I'm stuck till I do a new install.

thanks salparadise, your tip was faster than how I've been doing it.
I'm always open to saving time. :-)
