Can't get sound to work

I'm running fedora core 1, and I have a Envy24PT sound card. The Envy24PT is a cut down version of the Envy24HT. Kernel's 2.6 and 2.4.22-1.2149 can see the card and tells me it needs module snd-ice1724. However when I set it up and try to test the sound I get this message "The snd-ice1724 driver could not be loaded. This soundcard may not be compatible with Red Hat Linux."

Try forcing it in. It may be an autoload (pci hotplug) problem. Here is my post of the solution. Sometimes reading every config file in sight can help, as the comments usualy contain the solutions. That's how I got lucky.

Envy24PT

Doesn't work.. The snd-ice1724 driver is for the Envy24HT, I'm beginning to think it's not compatable with the cut down version of the sound card.

Heh heh. I did another google search on your behalf. This thread came up #1. LOL.

Good news, I think. The second result was THIS. Seems that your soundcard just got support.

Form the site's front page:
"OSS 3.9.8d announced
Bug fixes for ESS1688 recording and rate settings
Support for ALIM5455 SPDIF output added
Updated AudigyLS drivers
Support for VIA Envy24PT based soundcards and motherboard audio announced
Automatic Update feature added"

I hope this helps.

Still doesn't work

That's what I originally did.. I installed the OSS driver from the website (the one that's supposed to be comapatable) and kudzu still sees it as an Envy24HT when it SHOULD see an Envy24PT. I still get the same error message "The snd-ice1724 driver could not be loaded. This soundcard may not be compatible with Red Hat Linux."

I'm going to file it with the OSS site.. If I ever get it to work I'll post back here.

I wanna look into this stuff too for other reasons. I think there may be a fairly simple way to set a global path to sound or the dsp device or whatever. If i find it before you do, I'll let you know.

okay.. they added my card to the data base and installing oss398e and clicking "Test sound" produced some audio out of my speakers.. I then chose to have OSS start at boot time. but I still have no sound when in gnome.. The volume button is no longer grayed out, and I can change volume, but still no sound..

Does XMMS work?. Did you try RealOne?. Howabout games?. Check the
output dmesg to see what errors are returned by esd?.

If osstest works, then pretty much all OSS apps should work because the
osstest program is standard OSS API compatible. Perhaps you may
need to debug esd and see what's happening. One more thing, try
running ossxmix and enable the "src" button and see if that helps.

Nothing related to your sound is in that dmesg (you may want to look in /var/log/messages as well). We have the same mouse. Cheap and reliable. Shame all the Redmond products weren't like that.

via arena forums

anything interesting here?

Pretty much I just want sound to work.. I don't care if it's OSS or ALSA. I was trying OSS because fedora came with alsa and wouldn't detect my card and I couldn't find anything on the alsa site saying if they even supported the card or not..
I was reading this and it lead s me to believe i'm having issues because of the ac97 card. on a whim I went to Intel's site, download the driver for ac97 and tried to install it.. I got a message saying I had unsupported hardware or something like hardware not found whatever. I'm at work now, I'll post my /var/log/messages as soon as I get home....

There's nothing at all to indicate a sound chip. Hmmmm.
