Can't get SATA RAID using ICH6R Controller

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up a RAID1 over two 160gig SATA drives. I have an Asus P5GD1 Pro motherboard in my box. It has an Intel ICH6R Chipset on it.

During boot, I can set up the RAID1 fine, but when in linux, I can see both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb devices seperately.

I'm trying to install Slackware 10.1 on the RAID volume, which is proving more and more impossible by the minute!
The motherboard also supports AHCI. I'm not sure if I should use this, but it looks mighty good, apparently supporting hotplugging the drives too.

I need assistance in setting up this server please! I have no idea where to go from here. I'm currently trying to compile a kernel with SATA RAID support in it but am failing miserably!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Newbee's comments with a pinch of salt
Do not know about how much the intel is supported
maybe this is relevant
http://linux.yyz.us/sata/sata-status.html

Have you looked at the howto about raid?

Also there is something called dmraid that might be
of relevance.

Are you willing to have a PATA drive to boot from and
all the rest being on a raid 1, that would be simpler

Have a raid 0 at home + pata, but read it was difficult
to set up a distro to boot from a raid volume, I think
there are various methods, one being to install
evthg on only one drive and then "duplicate" it on
the other drive and make it become a raid 1

I will not be able to help much more (maybe I've got links somewhere),
I am sure I read things here in linuxquestions
