Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Can't get external modem to dial..

My wife and I have just built a new PC and have installed Mandrake PowerPack 10.1.

We live out in the styx so are trying to use an external USB modem, Diamond SupraMax. While it works fine on the XP box I can't get it to work at all on the new PC. I had understood that external modems were 'always' Linux compatible. Is this the case?

Under 'hardware' it is found but does not respond in any way when I try to make a new connection. I will be connecting through WalMart connect if that makes a difference.

Is it likely to need mounting?
We have an AMD 64 so could the 64-bit parts be causing problems?
Will I need to re-install?

While I appreciate that you experts would like to see the output of /sbin/lsusb I am unable to provide such information at this time.

Thankyou for any help.

Not 'external modems', but 'external RS232 modems' are always linux compatible. You're using an USB modem.

Can't help you further with your problem, sorry.

Thanks.

Oh, OK.

I'd thought it a little strange because Linux is usually better than MS at recognising hardware.

I take it this should work OK?
