Can't find/use fglrxconfig after ATI 9800 XT Drivers for Fedora Core 4 are installed
 

Let's see.. my situation is very simple. I just recently installed FC4 on a dual boot system. I would say that all of my hardware has been detected and the system is stable. To ensure the best performance possible for the software I want to use (Apple Shake), I wanted to install proper ATI drivers. So I went to ati website and downloaded the ATI Driver Installer. It went by without a hitch, but even though I can use aticonfig, fglxgears, and fglxinfo, I can't use or find fglxrconfig.

Now this is bad because most of the posts I've read in countless forums mention using fglrxconfig to set up the card properly. I've read of other methods of installing the drivers, like using rpm --force (and some other settings I don't have with me right now :() on the driver for x-windows x.org.6.8 (v8.22.5) provided by ATI as was suggested on another forum (sorry for not having it with me right now) and it also didn't work. Using every technique/method, the result is always the same... installation finishes, but the fglrxconfig is nowhere to be found (I've been looking around "manually" as well as using locate command)...

so the question is.. what am I doing wrong? How do I get this file to actually be installed so I can determine if I can configure the vid card 100% correctly?

BWT, here's info taken from running glxgears, fglrxinfo and other commands on console as root. Let me know if you need any other output for assistance. :(

Pays to get the current info for the drivers being used.
I have a feeling fglrxconfig is only relevant for drivers prior to 8.21.7.
Try "aticonfig --help".

What exactly do you mean? Apart from the information provided on ATI drivers website and on forums such as this, where could I get better, more current info? Am I missing something?

Dang it.. you are SOOOO RIGHT!! ARGH! In my quest to fix other issues I was having first (like just trying to get Shake to run), I grew used to looking around in the forums and sort of overlooking the information provided on the ATI website.. smart. Seeing messages from other people and their issues (which they were getting prior to this version) corrupted me. Shame on me. I will try it all out now, the proper way.

Now the issue I have is that before I installed the ATI drivers (having not read the new installer instructions fully.... shame on me x 2), I did not uninstall the Linux Default ATI Drivers. Even though everything seems to be working, I have noticed that certain windows don't display quite right (like when I log off, the window appears for a second then dissappears, leaving only the border. Although I know where the buttons are, they only reappear when I scroll over them). Also, I can't access the default FC4 Display Properties. When I try to, nothing appears. In light of what I just found out thx to you, it may have something to do with having to configure that with the ati drivers rather than that but I don't know yet.

So what would be the correct way to re-install the default drivers so that I can start the proper way?. Thanks again for the info and I'll report what happens afterwards.

Well, this time, I followed the instructions according to ATI. However... even after removing the linux default ATI driver(s), and then installing the ATI official drivers using the .run file, it still uses the mesa opengl driver. Reading from other forums, I know it should say (this person has configure a Radeon 9700 PRO properly):

OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 PRO Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5395 (X4.3.0-8.18.8)

...worse is the fact that when I use the ATI Control Panel, in the OpenGL section, I get 8.21.07 as the driver version. Isn't it supposed to be 8.22.50? What exactly does one have to do to get proper opengl configuration running?

Still don't have any idea why this is happening or what to do :(
