i use $mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3 and the file created.
but when i change the permissions to 777 from root but still the sound doesn't come. after logout and log into other user it shows the file attrib as old rw-------.
it seems the permissions 777 don't work after logout.
Listen, i tried all of that, and for me, at least, none of it worked. Umm, it would help to know what distribution you're using, and also, post the output of "lsmod". I still think it would be much simpler to just download the alsa drivers, but you should really only do that if all else fails. Oh yeah, and post the output of "lspci", also.

Listen, i'm telling you that changing the permissions is useless. I tried all that already, and it just doesn't work. Forget about it. Post the output of lspci and lsmod, and then we'll talk. And i would still seriously consider alsa drivers.
