can't download with DSL
I am using redhat 9 and we recently contracted SBC Yahoo DSL about 2 months ago. It only worked for 5 days from the 15 Nov to the 20th. Before and after then, every time I tried to download a file it wouldn't download past the first few kilobytes. the farthest I got was trying to download GNU Win II cd for windows, I got to 10.8 megabytes, then it just stopped. I tried wget and mozilla, same problem. Sometimes when I load a web page, the progress bar almost completes but never finishes and I have to reload the web page.
The modem has built in PPPoE client built into the modem. I had no trouble getting this modem to work with Redhat, since it was recognized bootup through eth0 via DHCP to get a IP (it is a dynamic IP). The strange thing about this is that I can upload a 16MB file to my e-mail address but I can't download the same file. It seems as if upload is unaffected. When I try to listen to streaming media (realplayer 10, listening to BBC or C-Span), it plays for the first 2 to 4 minutes, then it stops. I have 1.5 megabits downstream and 384 kilobits upstream. I'm going to try to slow down the downstream to 384 kilobits to see if it fixes my downloading problems. What I find strange is that I can download 10.8 megabytes without any probelm of this one file where other files only allow a few kilobytes to download. I want to call a technician to come to the house, but I don't have the money to do so for another several months. Note: I live in an apartment the technician readout of my modem is as follows: Technician Readout This information is for use by your service provider in diagnosing problems. 1 Manufacturer Efficient Networks, Inc. 2 Vendor ID b50045464e540400 3 Model Number 5100 4 Friendly Name SpeedStream 5100 ADSL Modem 5 Model Description Single Port Ethernet Modem 6 Model Name SpeedStream 7 Serial Number 2000B2394E21C 8 Hardware Version 1.0 9 Modem DSL Firmware Version a1.01.00.00 10 Modem Software Version 1.0.0.39 11 Hardware Options - Do you have another OS and/or machine that you can try to download from? If so, does it have the same problem?
Do you see any error on the client, or does it just silently drop the download? An error I would expect to see in this situation would be "Connection reset by peer". |
I tried under windows 95, but same problem. There is no error message, it just stops downloading, wget doesn't give any error messages, it just hangs. Also, using Mozilla, the same thing happens, no error messages, sometimes it never starts.

247 Ethernet 2684 Tx 2519172 0 13046 0 0
248 Ethernet 2684 Rx 9865497 325 12546 0 0 It looks like you're getting errors on the receive side of your ethernet connection. You might try: 1) replace your ethernet cable, 2) replace the ethernet adapter/card in your computer, 3) replace your modem Option 2 probably won't fix it if you tried two different computers, as it sounds like you did. When you tried the Windows computer, did you use the same ethernet cable and/or card? |
It smells like an MTU problem to me. Many DSL setups have this kind of problem, and it's quite easy to fix. You should check the current mtu for the network interface card you're using for the DSL link, and lower it by 63 or more. The default value on every interfaces i've seen is 1500, so 1437 should do. If it still doesn't work, you may lower it to any value and then increase it a little at a time until you get the largest value that works.
I don't know the specifics for this in Linux, but in FreeBSD you'd do `# ifconfig rl1 mtu 1437' to set the mtu to 1437 on the rl1 interface. This problem happens because the computer gets the mtu for the link to the modem, but the PPPoE uses a little of every packet (i think it's 63 bytes) for itself. Thus, when you receive data that doesn't fit one single packet, you PC expects to receive 1500 bytes (or whatever your mtu is) but only receives 1437, and won't process the other packet until it gets the remaining bytes -- which will never arrive. It works fine when sending data though. |
I will be calling a technician over to see what is wrong, on saturday 4th Dec 2004. I will post the results, here.
Note: I tried the MTU adjustments, by lowering the MTU to a rediculous value and then increasing it slowly. I was told that the MTU for my ISP is 1492, and the MTU on my machine should be 1500 for the 8 bytes that is added for routing ( I think). Will see what happens. Also, I tested both machines with 2 separate ethernet cards, independently.. I, also, used the same ethernet cable on both machines. |
You might try a different ethernet cable if only to eliminate it as the problem.

What you said is basically right though. The MTU for Ethernet is 1500. The MTU for PPPoE should be 1436 (64 bytes diff). The problem is likely stemming from the fact that the client is sending packets with the DF bit set. Of course, if the packet the server is trying to send back is too big for the PPPoE frame, and something along the line (like a TelCo router ;) ) asks for a frag (which it does via ICMP), and the host you're talking to is dropping ICMP (as many do now), your connection stalls and dies because the router threw the original frame that was too big on the floor. The telco router would frag them up for you, but you have the DF bit set. This is known as a "blackhole router". Note: FreeBSD's ppp has had a fix for this since ~4.3R, which is enabled by default. It's option enable tcpmssfixup in the ppp.conf file. |
You might just have a bad DSL filter on your phone line, which is causing data loss. Have you tried replacing that? My sister was running into problems similar to what you described, and the problem was solved simply by replacing the filter. Good luck with it -- J.W.

We finally had the SBC technician come to the house. He tested with his laptop and his modem and he had the same probelm I had in downloading.
He said the problem was with the mains. He also said they would do some repair and call when they would complete their work. Will keep you posted when they finish their work. |
They finally fixed the DSL connection. I'm not sure what they did, but they told me that they would call me when it was fixed.
I appreciate the help from everybody here in trying to help me fix my trouble with our DSL connection. Note: they said it was a problem on SBC's side, with their wiring. |
