I have a Lucent 56k int. Winmodem.
I thought I found a driver that may work but I still can't get Mandrake 9.0 to recognise it.
I have read that it is difficult to get winmodems to work under Linux. Is this true and am I wasting my time? Should I just throw another modem in and save any more hassles?
Thanks for any help.
it is difficult, Mandrake doesn't include the drivers because they're not open source...from what i understand. didn't it tell you "goto www.linmodems.org" when it detected your PCI card during install? I successfully installed the drivers and had dial-up networking working with a lucent 56k, of course...this begs the question... GET BROADBAND!
hope that helps
Thanks,
I've already been to that page but i'll try again.
Tell me, when I go to that page what link should I then click on. I find it a bit confusing. Please don't say the Mandrake website link because that just takes me to the homepage.
I don't even know if I need a binary package or source.
I appreciate your help though.
download that and install. Even though I'm currently on a t3 line, I did have to use my Lucent WinModem at one point and I still have it in my system. This RPM should work for you though, seeing as how it works for me. The one thing to make sure is that it matches your kernel, hence the 2.4.19_24. Assuming that you haven't upgraded your kernel, that *should* be the kernel that came with mandy.

Ok, I d'l the file, installed it, but the modem doesn't come up in my hardware list.
To install the driver I just clicked on the file which I had burnt to a cd. Is this right or do I need to copy the d'l file to my Linux drive first?
When I clicked on the file it seemed to install fine. But I don't know where to go from here to get my modem detected.
I read somewhere that it has to be ttylt and ttys - is this right? I only get ttysXX in the list when I go to setup.
I am thinking to just get another modem but I would like to puruse this for the Linux learning curve it can give me.
Thanks for you help.
BTW - How do I find out which kernel I am running?
And....I have turned off PnP in the BIOS.
Doesnt the driver come with any documentation of which tty to use.. check the faq from where to u d'ld the bianry.. there wiil be info abt it.. lucent modems work in linux

Rep:
When I installed the source file and I installed Debian's .deb file it point to /dev/ttyLT0. It create this device and then it points /dev/modem to it.
I'm not quite sure how the rpms will work but check to see if you have something similar to ttyLT0, this is number 0 not letter O.
Once you install the drivers, use KDE's kppp dialer to try and dialout.
To find out which kernel you have, at a terminal window type:
You just need to install the RPM, then go to K --> Networking --> Remote access --> and then to KPP (Internet Dial-up Tool) and have the modem set to "Modem" in the device tab. tty is not used after you install driver.
Ok, thanks for all your help.
I had done as you suggested with setting Modem to /dev/modem etc etc but still no luck.
Anyway, I bought a Swann Spirit 11 V92 internal yesterday and installed that instead.
Once again though, no detection, played around with settings, basically done everything suggested in this thread, but still no go under Linux.
What am I doing wrong?
Does Mandrake or any other distro intall devices as easily as XP does?
Heh, there really is no distro that will install devices as easily as XP... The reason for this is becuase so many devices are made FOR Windows and not linux. I found it odd that you can't install the lucent under /dev/modem and have it work. I've tried drivers for Red Hat and Mandrake for the same modem and at that very same website and it ALWAYS worked. Even in different motherboards. Maybe something is wrong with your linux install. But I'm not sure. I would do a fresh install of linux and start from ground zero.
I'm close to giving up but not quite.
I've re-installed Mandrake 9.0 and all went smoothly.
However, I go to KDE's kppp dialer and go to setup and device tab and try /dev/modem and every other one that is list and when I click on connect a message comes with 'can't find modem at ???????" - wherever I set it in device.
I suppose I need a SwannSmart 11 driver for linux.
Any clues if this is right and if so where do I get it?
Thanks
