Dmesg returns

https://pastebin.com/L1Zw0tDv

smartctl for my hard drive returns

jamescw@james-allseries:~$ sudo smartctl -i /dev/sde
smartctl 7.2 2020-12-30 r5155 [x86_64-linux-5.13.0-40-generic] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-20, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

/dev/sde: Unknown USB bridge [0x14cd:0x6600 (0x201)]
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

I don't know how to specify the device type.

I can't tell whether or not the drive is spinning.

Also, do you suggest trying a new usb cable?

Interesting I did not see any errors.

I am guessing the enclosure is to old to be supported by smartctl.

When was the last time you used the drive? Is the enclosure powered from the USB port or separate power supply?

Is it an aftermarket enclosure? If not what is the product number?

External HDD cases may be a source for various strange problems. Therefore check your HDD seperated from external HDD case first.
  1. Remove HDD from external case
  2. Buy a adapter 2½″ IDE-HDD to 3½″ IDE cable. This passive adapter costs a few Euros only. This adaper looks like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...tebook-HDD.jpg
  3. Connect HDD via a "40-pin connector/80-conductor Ultra ATA cable" with an IDE controller in a computer. This IDE controller should support UltraDMA/100 (AKA udma5 AKA UDMA-100 AKA Ultra ATA-100 AKA PATA/100) because your HDD (HITACHI DK23FB-60) support this transfer mode too. Disconnect all other HDDs & SSDs in this computer to avoid data loss on them!
  4. Start a live Linux from CD, DVD or USB-Stick on this computer.
  5. Run smartctl -s on /dev/sda
  6. Run badblocks -wsv /dev/sda
  7. If badblocks test ends with 0 badblocks found and smartctl -a /dev/sda doesn't show any ambiguous or bad things create desired partitions on HDD. Otherwise dispose HDD.

I think I used the drive at my Grandmother's house. It might have been damaged when it hit the ground.

It uses a mini-a usb and it is powered by the USB.

I don't know what kind of enclosure it is.

I don't know what product number it is.

If the drive was dropped then it is probably not worth the time, effort or money trying to see if you get it working. Do you have any data on the drive that is worth recovering? Obviously not since you were trying to reformat it. forget about it...

@Arnulf my hard drive is connected to my computer by mini-a usb; therefore I can not use that adaptor.
