Can't burn some dvd's, complains incompatible media type

Hey guys I have a nec nd-3500 dvd burner. It supports pretty much every kind of dvd and cd type there is. I've used it fine for a few years so it works fine and everything.

The problem I'm having is I purchased some memorex dvd-r's and they work fine, but with maxell they don't seem to be working. growisofs complains that it has an imcompatible media type. Before to fix this problem I returned this, this time however I stupidly wrote on them first so now I'm stuck with them and I'm wondering if there's anything I might do to fix them.

I'm pretty sure I've used maxell before and they worked fine in windows. I don't see why there would be any difference in linux, but I dunno I'm just fishing for anything here really. I think what's likely the case is maxell just changed they're process to something cheaper and apparently less compatible. So if anyone has any idea lemme know, I'd love to find out I don't gotta toss these things out.
