This is an issue with an external disk drive attached to a USB port. /etc/fstab has a line for this device. When I specify the root password, I can vi /etc/fstab (in an attempt to remove the entry for the offending device), but the file is opened readonly - I cannot edit it. Permissions are rw for the owner root.
I now have an FC6 box I cannot boot. When it was FC5, the occasional [FAILED] issue was successfully dealt with by a reboot.
Can anyone suggest how to edit /etc/fstab, or some other way to get this box bootable.
Hi,
Use your fedora Disk And Boot in rescue mode at Boot prompt by typing
Linux Rescue
after the system boots up change to the installed Fedora installation by
typing chroot /mnt/sysimage
now browse to the fstab file and try editing
Boot problem fixed as per suggestion - thank you Cyber! Now back to the "Checking filesystems" issue...
Postscript
Now that I can boot, the external disk drive appears on /dev/sdc1 on my FC6 upgrade, whereas it was originally on /dev/sdb1 on the FC5 install. The disk is plugged into the same physical USB port...
Anyway, /etc/fstab has been re-edited to now mount /etc/sdc1 on /.snapshots, and the mount problem is now fixed. I still get the "usb 1-1 ..." boot message, but booting completes, and /dev/sdc1 is mounted as expected. The "usb 1-1" message is a mystery to me, but I've got the box back again.
