can't add a cups printer
I'm having trouble getting my Redhat Linux 9.0 server to allow people to add it's CUPS printer. I have used printconf to configure the printer (HP 1200 LaserJet) and I can print a test page without error. Users on the network that are using (ick)Windows can send print jobs without error. BUT, if I issue an lpq command, or try to add the printer from gnome, I get this error message:
server-error-service-unavailable
I've re-installed CUPS, I've retarted the CUPS service, I bitten large pieces of the printer and spit them on the floor :-)
Any ideas?
thanks in advance,
steve

Use the lpr command to print.
You can do what Shotsy said and add the printer or change the settings of a printer from anywhere on your network. Though you need the IP address of your printer server.

I have done all that you suggest as root, but the behavior continues.

Try it via the cmd line as follows
Adding Your First Printer from the Command-Line
Run the lpadmin command with the -p option to add a printer to CUPS:
/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p printer -E -v device -m ppd
For a HP DeskJet printer connected to the parallel port this would look like:
/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p DeskJet -E -v parallel:/dev/lp1 -m deskjet.ppd
Similarly, a HP LaserJet printer using a JetDirect network interface at IP address 11.22.33.44 would be added with the command:
/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LaserJet -E -v socket://11.22.33.44 -m laserjet.ppd

I did and got the same error:
unable to connect to server, connection refused.
I'm logged in as root and entering lpadmin without any operands gives the help message.
