Camera Detection (Gnome)

I use to be able to hook up my USB camera (Canon Powershot S500) to my PC and I would get the following window that detects I have inserted a USB camera. I know Linux is able to recognize my camera as I have never had any problems in the past 2 years in Gnome.

Now I still get the window you see above, however I never get any further than what you see.
When I prompt it to "Import Photos", usually a few seconds later I would see the transfer status bar with all my images on the camera being loaded. Now, nothing happens. It just does nothing and forgets about the camera and I can't understand why. I have tried this on 3 seperate Debian/Gnome work stations so I think either something in Gnome has changed or is no longer being loaded during a base install.

Under "Removable Drives & Media", there is a "Camera" tab and I do show I have a check enabled under "Import Digital Photos When Detected" and the path show is: "gnome-volume-manager-gthumb %h

Any suggestions?

GNOME 2.x uses gPhoto2 for digital camera support. I suggest you go to http://www.gphoto.org and look at the documentation and FAQ there.

I think the problem may be that you need to do some system setup. Specifically, look at Chapter 4 of the gPhoto2 Manual (http://www.gphoto.org/doc/manual/).

When I was using Debian, I needed to do a little extra setup to get gPhoto working as well; that's why I am suggesting this.

I hope this helps.
