Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Cambridge Audio DAC

I have used the Celeron version of the Intel NUC as a small PC, Media Server and Media Player. I am using Mint Linux.

Can I ask questions on USB sound:

1) What is the difference between Digital Output (S/PDIF) and Analogue Output over USB?

When I connect the DAC over USB I get sound from it, regardless of which option I choose, analogue or digital. I think the S/PDIF option may actually sound sharper and brighter, but need to do a proper listening test to confirm. Does the Analogue output a digital bitstream to the DAC, even though it is called Analogue?

2) If I plug my DAC in after boot up, and not connected during the system start, there is no option for S/DIF. Why is this, and how can I make the option appear if I connect the DAC in after system boot up? The S/PDIF option is only present if the USB DAC is connected before switching system on.

In windows some of this may be fully supported. To #1, if it works then don't play with it unless you need digital output.

For #2 I'd assume that the system may be defaulting to internal sound and you could change the default sound in and out to DAC.
