Buying a debian friendly graphic card, supportng 1680x1050 res

Hi

I'm building a new desktop computer. It will be running debian (stable or testing) - and I need to buy a craphic card the supports a screen resolution of 1680x1050. It will mainly be used for desktop applications but also to view some tv (DVB-t).

I would really avoid using hours to get a new graphic card working under debian. Which cards are easy/simple to get to work with the specified resolution ? The card should have a DVI-interface.

Regards
Henning

Well NVidia Cards work pretty reliable in Linux, the Driver is not OpenSource but its a good driver, only Suspend to Ram is not that reliable with it.
ATI just released their Driver as OpenSource and its supposed to be stable and reliable from what I heard (don't own a ATI/AMD Card).
Of course Intel is always a good choice since their driver is OpenSource for a long time and also very stable and compatible, but since their are no real "Cards" on the Market, you either have an intel Onboard or your out of luck on that one.
All Cards I know of support 1680x1050 resolution (at least the newer ones not older than I would say 2 years) I never hat problems with my 22" LCD running that resolution even an EEE PC can handle it.

I've been running an Nvidia 7600GT in my worksation up until last week (when I sold the worksation) and it was reliable and fast. I was running Fedora/Ubuntu/Arch/Slackware on it and never had Problems, so I guess Debian will be fine .

I run nVidia cards in all my Debian custom built machines as well..

Other machines have either the integrated intel video or integrated ATI and they work just fine...

I run an NVIDIA 8800 gts on my Debian machine.Works just fine with the proprietary driver.
Maximum screen resolution is up to 2560x1600,although personally i have only used it at 1280x1024 as that is the maximum my monitor supports. The card also has twin DVI output.
Hope this is of some use.
Happy Shopping!
Regards.

I'm running currently a Nvidia GeForce 8500GT card under Debian Etch and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Pixel shader 5, nice resolution, everything you'd wish, and it's not that expensive either.
Setting up drivers takes me 1 minute with a tool called 'Envy'. I played tons of games in Wine as well with over 80-90 FPS with this card, so I recommend it.

Thanx for the input

Hi all.

Thanx for your input. It seems that buying a nVidia base card is the way to go - so thats what I'll do. Once again thanx for taking the time to post your thoughts.

Regards

I just built a machine for a client using two PNY (Nvidia) GeForce 8500 GT with 512 MB RAM on board. Runs great. I installed Ubuntu but it should also work in Debian. I found that the maximum resolution appears to be 1650 x 1050 with true color so it barely manages to qualify, but it is a great card.
