The top one, gigapc, appears to be a good choice. External serial.

The second one, store4pc, appears to be a winmodem. I found this little tidbit.

Not to mention, it LOOKS like a winmodem. I would skip that one.

The third, buymicro, one is a guaranteed winmodem but you may can get drivers. I think you have to buy them. Trust me, buy a serial, not USB. You are already buying a modem. This is the giveaway for me:

The fourth, upgradenation, may be a hardware modem. It is internal though. I can't be really sure.

I found this one that is OK. I have this and can tell you that I have had no trouble with it, well I forgot to add serial to the kernel, but that was my fault.

I know that one will work. Someone else may post the brand and a link to one they have. It has a pretty long set of cords to. I did have to reset it once when the power blinked. I didn't have a UPS then. All I had to do was power off the modem and then turn it back on. If it were internal, I would have had to reboot. :mad:

Ok i have decided to go with the newegg.com one becaus its cheap LOL.
I will post agian when it arives and tell you how it works.
It says its linux compattable and when I emailed them they said it would work.

I bought most of mine from newegg. They are good.

When you get the modem, you will need to find out which port is on. You can cheat and use windoze to find that. It should be one of the following though:

Com2          |              /dev/ttyS1

Just go into Kppp, setup and under device tab just select the port. You can try one and if it don't work, try the other one. When you click connect it should say "modem ready" and then go to work from there.

That modem will also work in windoze by the way. It's not just for Linux. Heck you can use it in DOS too. It is a "smart" modem, not a dumb windoze thing.

Do you use kppp to dial to your isp. and wht is that scrip window for.
I have a few modems that i have tried using kppp with and when i got to dial it says modem ready and then initizing then it freezes up. is that becaus of the modem.

Well, I've had problems with Winmodems and kppp - even if you get the kernel modules loaded on boot and you can superficially talk to your modem etc - you can still have pppd daemons dying after a couple of minutes, little/no data coming through your browser - go for an external serial modem - on average people seem to have more success.

It's controllerless, it's serial, is there anything wrong with it? If not, I think I'll buy it cause it fits my thrifty budget. (student).

That is a modem. I have read where people get it to work. I'm not to sure how that thing works though. If you search froogle.google.com I saw one the other day that I know will work for about $5.00 more. If you need me to I can go find it. You may want to do some searches on here and see what problems others run into.

If you are going to spend that much you may as well cure the headache too.

Again, if other people have reccomendations for specific modems for around that price I'd be more than happy to be enlightened.

That link in the previous post I made should work just fine. It is external serial and is the cheapest I have seen so far. I paid $40.00 for my ActionTec from techdepot, on sale, and that one is like $20.00. You can't beat that. Brand is not as important. As long as it is external and a hardware based modem, it should work just fine.

I have to admit though, I am confused by the conexant thing in a earlier post. It is serial and all, but it sounds like a software modem. :scratch: :confused:

I think you have to be a contributing member to do E-mail and PMs. I'm going to one time or another, but being disabled sort of sucks. I want to get DirecWay or DSL too. DirecWay costs $600.00 for the hardware stuff and DSL ain't nowhere close. :cry: :cry: And, 26K dial-up sort of sucks too.

Well I got my modem and it works in linux using kppp,but the connection is a 9.1 kbps it is the same in windows So i guss i will contact trendnet support and se whats up.

You may have a phone line problem. I can only get a 26K connection here. The wires are getting old.

You may want to call the phone company and complain about it. Mine guarantees a 19K connection but they still came out and checked the wires. They did that even though I was above the minimum.

I still want DSL myself. :cry: :cry: :cry:

Well, you already bought one so I'm too late, but I'll go ahead and recommend the Best Data 56K external serial modem. It gets detected perfectly with Linux and I think it does something to help smooth out the noise in the signals. I've found them for about $25-30 on Ebay.
I have rotten phone lines but my connections are significantly faster using this modem instead of the Actiontec PCI Call Waiting modem. Wish I could get DSL here... *sigh*
