Building AMD 64 system. I need advice.

I have some cash from Xmas, and a b-day around the corner.

I am looking to put together a Amd 64 3000+ system.

First off is there anything I should be aware of?

I have pretty much decided on the Amd anthlon 64 3000+ 939 chip.

I need help with the mobo.
I am looking at the asus a8n-sli deluxe.

Is it worth getting an SLI board? (not sure if this will be supported in linux.)

I am also not sure on the Nforce4 drivers.

I am also uncertain on the PCI express and Linux.

I just wanna build a system that will not be absolete tomorrow, but would rather not spend more to have tech. that is not supported in Linux.

I am looking at Debian 64/ Gentoo 64 / or FC3 64 for the distro. Still not sure.
Mostly dependent on whether I have broadband connection by the time time computer comes together.

I am looking to buy:
----------------------------------------
Asus A8n - sli deluxe.
AMD 64 3000+ 939 chip
1G kingston 3200 DDR400
20 80gig SATA drives.
evga e-geforce 6600 gt.
-----------------------------------------
I have cases, keyboard, mouse, and monitor lying around.

I was not sure what forum to post this to. I apologize if I have choosen the wrong one.

I know I have alot of research to do before any purchases are made, but I am looking for some input.

Regards,
Blair

I put together a similar system, except I have an MSI K8N Mobo and everything runs very well. I use SuSe 9.1. I haven't bothered to upgrade to 9.2 yet. It was up and running with no major glitches, just a couple of tweaks here and there. Here's the catch, I find that the 32 bit version of 9.1 runs faster than the 64 bit! I don't have as much time as I'd like to research this but I feel it has to do with the hardware not being able to keep up with the processor.

Thanks for the response.
I am glad Pci -e works.

I am still wondering if SLI is worth it or not.

I'm thinking of building a similar setup. Not sure about the dual vid cards either. I think for now I am going to hold off to see what is supported (and when 64 bit support becomes a bit better in linux) and the prices will then too if I do decide to go for a new system. Although I have a pretty decent box for now so I can get by Gotta say the 6600 gt is looking pretty good for its price point, believe it has fewer pipelines and 128 bit but its still besting the 9800xt. I might just upgrade my ti4800 to the 6600gt (abouth the dual card thing, I do remember hearing it would be supported in linux somewhere, but yeah, not sure if it's worth it anyways, friend is saying you only get a 50% boost in some games, but I don't know for sure)
