Building a computer
I'm planning on building a desktop computer, and was wondering is there a web site that could help me obtain the right info on what parts would be compatible with RH8.0.

The best thing to do...if you are going to build it. Is to go to whatever store you are planning to buy the parts from, fry's, compUSA, whatever...and make sure they all say on the respective boxes...Linux compaatible. If it does...then you are saafely betting your money, in that you will not have any problems detecting and using your hardware.

I was planning on buying everything online and then putting it all together. Do you think this is a bad plan?

Bleeding Edge AND Exotic sounds pretty Decent!!, hehehe
got some 3 gighz cpu...if they are out yet, hehe, and some whooping 4 gigs of Ram....and some other WHOOPING 256 gigs of Hardrive space...and don't forget about your T-3 connection, heheheh...ohh, too bad the Newest and coolest Video Card will probably not be fully supported by Linux...that is still the big downside about buying a really cool video card for Linux...you just can't really use it, heheh.
Aside from that...Everything else you can get and use to its full capabilities!,
Well , nodoubt, you just need to list what you want...i.e.
Ethernet Card
Video card
Zip drive
DVD
Burner
.....................
and so on...and I'll hook you up with some badass stuff that work in linux...but what do you want your computer to be capable of?
UFO support?, Warhead missile controller?, hehehe (my favorite)
well, tell us!,

Everything is a bit of a crapshoot. For instance, what zLinux said about video cards is right, except for Nvidia cards, who provide decent drivers, and I don't trust manufacturers to be right about Linux compatability, the best example is the v2.7 of the WMP11 and WUSB11 wireless adapters from linksys, which don't have anything to do with the drivers they point you to. Sometimes it takes a little while for mobo chipsets to have full support.
A couple things to avoid right now: those P4 boards with the built in intel video, bad, very evil. SiS all in one boards are so 1/2 and 1/2 supported its too much of a headache to do all the math. ATA133 cards are mostly supported, via the manufacturers, promise or highpoint, and they prebuild everything for RH these days anyway, so you should be alright there if you want a perverse drice throughput. Make certain when you compare things, on like Aussie said, the portal of all knowledge, that you're not looking at old news... a report about the 2.2.15 kernel freaking out on ati128 cards is going to be pretty useless info.
Cheers,
Finegan

Everybody is forgeting about hardware compatiblity. Not all devices work properly in a computer. For example, my ABIT KA7-100 motherboard does work with ATI Radeon VE but when it displays pretty looking graphics, it halts in Windows and LINUX. I had to get another video card or swap my Radeon VIVO from my newer system every time I want to use my old computer system.
I mostly go to Aberdeen's web site to check what devices are compatible with chipsets or motherboard models. Aberdeen is a little bit costly but they do test every computer component before shipping. They have a feature to use a selected motheboard with compatible components.
You should be very worry about video cards, motherboards, and memory. Not a lot of motherboards like or can handle the new video cards and memory modules. Also new CPUs may not work in motherboards because the motherboard can not handle higher multplier values. The motherboard may need BIOS upgrade to be able to handle newer processors.
I recommend an 850E chipset motherboard for Pentium 4. For AMD I recommend Nvidia's 420 chipset. Those chipsets may not be supported under LINUX but they are top of the line at the moment.
Building a computer can be fun if the above is carefully read.
