For a server you don't need a sound card.
1) Get a network card with onboard processor. You probably want two or more networks and learn about load balancing.
2) Atleast 1 gigabyte of memory. ECC memory is recommended
3) nForce chipset for AMD processors and future CPU upgrades
4) SCSI or suzzy hard drives for mySQL and other services
5) Case with a door so people don't mess with it
6) atleast 400 watt Power factor controlled power supply
7) In-line UPS (ex. APC BACKUP-PRO)
8) decent monitor, keyboard, mouse to setup the server
9) you may want a KVM switch if you don't want to get a new keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
10) decent video card to see what you are setting up
11) a few T3-45 lines or several cable modems.
TYAN and ASUS has great dual AMD motherboards.

!!!!!!!! 1.5 grand?
I maybe have smaller goals than you for building a server, but mine is a RH8.0 ftp/ http server and you know how much it cost me? 80 bux and that was for the router!
Well i got lucky and built the machine from scratch from two computers that my friends gave me.
i don't think you need an expensive machine, my friend runs a 1 terabyte server off a 233mhz 80 mb ram machine and it is fine.
Just ram and a fast connection, oh and also, lots and lots of hdd space.
Install the OS with minimal stuff, without the media players and sound stuff.

It must not get much traffic then. That thing would choke with the traffic of a high use Web server or as a server in a large corporation.

well i would presume as well, but the person that posted this did not seem to mention running a webserver that is intended for high traffic. If you want one for friends, lan parties, and ftp server and fun stuff, you don't need to go overboard, since the thing will be sitting under a desk the whole time. I just suggest lots of ram and maybe +1ghz processor. No need for overkill here.

A game server maybe.. but a regular ol' website.. sure it would work. Do you realize up until about 3 months ago LQ was running on just a Dual Pentium 180 mhz machine.. with I think only 512 megs of RAM, might have been less even on RAM.
Now a big ecommerce site or a game server.. yeah I would opt for bigger faster everything.. and of course the more constant users on it as well..

I don't see a corporation mentioned in there anywhere .
But i guess i am the cheaper alternative way. If you want to spend 1 grand on this machine, DO it. But if you want to be cost effective, you would realize that you don't need a machine that fast for something so trivial. You'll prolly end up using that machine because of it's power.
