Buffer I/O error

This may be a similar thread to this one, but the OP mentioned that the drive was not giving any error in Windows.

So I was asked by a friend to fix their internal HDD for me since their laptop was giving them
Quote:
Operating System not found
after installing their Ubuntu system unto a live usb.

My initial findings were that their GPT/MBR partition is broken. I had to confirm this by mounting it on Windows via SATA to USB, but to no avail. It was spewing

Disk not initialized ...
so I tried initializing it, but it was spewing another error but I couldn't read it because it automatically closes after a split second, and I can't even get to capture it with print screen.

So I moved on to my live usb Debian, couldn't get it to mount and decided to run photorec since it can scan storage devices even without mounting them and found a ton of Buffer I/O errors from different blocks:

Code:
...
...
print_req_error: critical medium error, dev sdc, sector 17170 06 00
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17170, async page read
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17171, async page read00RIVER_SENSE
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17172, async page read
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17173, async page read
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17174, async page read00
Buffer I/O on dec sdc, logical block 17175, async page read=DRIVER_SENSE
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] tag#0 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=dRIVER_SENSE
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] tag#0 Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] tag#0 Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error 00 01 00
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] tag#0 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 00 00 46 90 00 00 01 00
...
...
and it goes on even before sector 17160 to 976772992 (I was only able to capture the bit above by my phone. there is a video I took and I'll add it later after I get back home)

I don't know if the fix from the somewhat similar thread can fix this, and I hope it could since I was told there were some archives needed by their parents this January.

P.S. I haven't tried doing systemctl yet. I will do it later I get back home. I broke my precision screwdriver so I can't get into the laptop again, so I went out to buy one.

Welcome LinuxQuestions.

Either the drive is corrupted or has died and I would guess it is the later. When Windows wants to initialize a drive that typically means reformatting which is not what you want to happen. Hopefully the archives have been saved to some other storage device.

I think you mean smartctl and not systemctl which is the SMART utility to read the drives internal errors.
