Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Buffalo (axnet_cs) PCMCIA card initiated, but no eth0 device

I installed Slackware 10.2, upgraded the kernel to 2.6.19.1 or so with the axnet_cs device driver for my Buffalo PCMCIA card. The device is initiated and recognized, but there is no eth0 device and one cannot be created.

When I run ifconfig eth0 up it says:

eth0: unknown interface: no such device

I installed the new PCMCIA tools for the 2.6 kernels from here:

http://kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/ke...ia/pcmcia.html

lspci shows the correct device, the lights on the card are on.

Is there a command or certain file in which you associate the driver with eth0?

Thanks in advance!

John

Is it true that eth0 is only an alias for the driver name?

Hi, I'm not experienced with GENTOO. That said, there are a few commands that Linux terminals utilize to interface with hardware requirements prior to networking and getting on-line. One is "/etc/init.d/network start" another "/etc/sysconfig/network/config". Or in some Distro's..."/etc/rc.d/adsl start" and "/etc/rc.d/adsl stop" Try LinuxQuestions.org for a more complete list of commands for Linux terminals.
