Brother Label Printers under Linux?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using Brother label printers (like the PT-9500PC, PT-1500PC, ). I'm partial to the PT line, as I already have a PT-1600 that uses TZ-series tapes, and to the 9500PC, as it has an auto-cutter (though the 1500 definitely has a nicer price tag).

I know that there's linux support as per openprinting.org, but what I'm really wondering is what success people have with multiple lines/blocks of text, how formatting is done, bar codes, etc.

Also, how about laying out things like rotate/repeat cable labels, separated port labels, flags, etc.

I'm going to be doing a *big* cabling project soon, with rotate/repeat cable labels, port labels, bar code asset tags, etc. I figured it would be a lot easier to write a script to pull the data right from my asset tracking database and print the labels, rather than printing them all by hand.

Any thoughts/experiences?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi there,

I have never had a brother label printer so i am sorry if i am not of much help. The label printer i once had i never really had much luck with and in the end i gave up using it. I found a british labels company to print my labels instead, they saved me so much hassle.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, that's not an option for me - I need the labels with barcode and text that matches up to serial numbers for equipment (labeling servers, cabling, etc.) that aren't totally "serial" - they're context-sensitive, so they need to be generated uniquely for each piece.

The end result was going to be to have my equipment and wiring databases automatically print barcoded labels.

I haven't made any progress yet.

If your problem persists maybe you should try getting a Zebra or Printronix printer. I am currently using the Zebra to print my barcode labels. Its very user friendly and also very reliable.
