brother 540CN

i'm using gentoo, and i have connected my brother 540cn using the network.

Now i've tried a few howto's, but i can't help but feel that i am not extracting the rpm files well.
I also tried: rpm2tar. too tar.gz the rpm's.

I'm trying with cups.
The state when printing keeps saying : stopped.

Description: Brother DCP-540CN
Location: Local Printer
Make and Model: Brother DCP-540CN CUPS v1.1
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: socket://
This is the result:

ID Name User Size Pages State Control
Brother_DCP-540CN_192.168.1.110-60 Test Page root 19k Unknown stopped
I tried everything from ldp to hpdeskjet.

Has anyone succesfully installed this printer ?

I don't have that printer, but if you look here

you will find your printer listed with the linux drivers to make it work. I have a Brother, and their driver works for me like a charm.

seems i didn't look good enough at the FAQ page..
emerging alien & then using:

alien --to-tgz --scripts xxxxxxx.tgz

created install scripts..

First copying the extracted usr to / and then doing the install script for LPR first. Then the same process for cupswrapper, and it works like a charm.
