Broadcom network card working intermittently in laptop
Hi,
I am using a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with Mandriva 2006. I have a Broadcom on-board network card, which until recently has been working fine. Now, sometimes the computer fails to find it, and when it does it will often allow me to connect, but will crash when trying to do so or shortly after connecting.
I am experiencing the same problems in both Linux and Windows on the same machine, which leads me to suspect it is a hardware issue.
What should I do to either diagnose this problem further or attempt to solve it?
Thanks,
- QS Computing.

WiFi Card failure?
Check your logs /var/log/ and "dmesg" for information that may help you determine your problem.
I assume you are using the same bcm driver between Windows and Linux since you have a Broadcom card and are apparently using ndiswrapper.
Try updating your driver, which may also be the culprit.
Finally, you may want to try the new bcm43xx driver included with the 2.6.16 kernel versions. See: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=441251

No, I'm not using ndiswrapper - I'm actually using native Linux drivers for both my ethernet and wireless cards. But the wireless is working fine; it's just the ethernet I am having problems with.
I'm using the tg3 driver for the ethernet card. I will check the logs next time I use my laptop, but I do remember from checking the logs before that, when the system allowed me to connect and then crashed, there was always a variety of network-related messages followed by "link is down" as the last message before the crash.
Thanks very much,
- QS Computing.

You have checked your cables and router, right?

Yes, they appear to be working fine. Anyway, the computer isn't detecting the network card itself (ie. it doesn't appear in the list of available cards in MCC, which it normally does even when the cable is disconnected, nor does it appear in Windoze device manager).

Maybe it is your network card, or a loose connection somwhere. Unfortunate, since I found when I owned a Dell 3800, Dell's service was lousy. They were always anxious to replace your motherboard for you - no matter what your problem seemed to be. All I needed was a replaceable plug-in power board too. Ended up going to ebay and bought a m-board cheap... Then the computer was stolen...
Good luck.
