brightness not working on hp victus 15 gaming laptop

Booted up linux on my hp laptop it has a dual GPU (and and nvidia). After I booted up as soon as the distro symbol came up the laptop dimmed. This repeated on whichever distro I've tried (Now currently on fedora). I have checked and the nvidia divers have been correctly installed using nvautoinstaller. I then changed the kernel and that also had no effect. I've even tried to manually change the /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness file which had no effect being as the slider works and also alters this file, the only difference in the brightness number is that closer to zero the screen brightens slightly and closer to 255 (max_brightness) the screens dims slightly. I don't know what else to try please help. (running fedora 36 with kernel 6.0.5-200.fc36.x86_64)

Hi,

What do you mean exactly by dual GPU?

For gaming laptops, it is often the case that the screen is hard-wired through the graphics card (in this case I presume it would be the Nvidia GPU).
In that case, the issue is probably because the driver is not working well. The version is often not compatible (even if Nvidia's website lists it for your device).

nvautoinstaller will install the latest version by default. To be honest, different versions of the driver work variably with different cards.
I would suggest you uninstall the driver installed by nvautoinstaller, look for your graphic card's model in the driver search engine on the Nvidia website, and try different versions of the driver starting with the latest compatible version listed.

I simply hope Fedora will have different versions available from their repo. If not, maybe you will need to find a way to compile custom rpm packages.

I downloaded the .run file for Nvidia, but rn I'm having trouble finding the best way to delete my current drivers that I got through nvautoinstaller, what do you think is the best way to go about this?

I found this: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/nvid...nux-35/19243/3

It seems the autoinstall is just a wrapper around dnf and your package manager should be able to recognize the nvidia drivers and remove them. The trick then is to fix grub in case it was booting using the GPU.

I also found this: https://www.if-not-true-then-false.c...-nvidia-guide/
It might help.

All the best.
