Boxes just beep and no bios screen is displayed

Hi,

I was going to install Slackware on an old PC. When I turned the box on, it probed the floppy drive and keyboard OK but then just beeped a couple of times and nothing else happened. Whilst this is an old PC, I was using it a couple of weeks before and it worked fine. just in case, I removed all the cards except graphics, then I reseated the ram chips and graphics just to be sure. However on startup I had the same problem.

So... I dug out and old 486 that was working fine the last time I used it, guess what - same problem. So... I dug out an old Vectra... So... I dug out and old IBM.....

All four boxes had been sat in a corner of my living room so I don't think it's a moisture or temperature issue, also the power outlets I used work fine as I had another PC running from them at the same time to read the Slackware manual. I can't understand why all four boxes can have the same problem. Any ideas?

if that happened to one box, i'd have tell you to turn on the jumper that clears CMOS data on your motherboard, then try to boot, then replace the jumper as it was initially, and then see what happen...

but if you say there're 4 PCs in that case... it must be something else, and i don't know what to tell you (do you have an EMP at home? ^^)
good luck

Well, if it is really several separate boxes, it is really odd, but it sounds like you just exchanged the hardware. So i would guess that it is either some broken cable or the power supply.

How many times is it beeping? The following page should give you more of an idea as to what is happening:
