booting problem

hello members,
I have a viewsonic E90fmb monitor and Intel 82845G graphicval controller with 2.45GHz processor.I have 80Gb harddisk space on which i haven windows XP and linux8.0(graphical version).I downloaded intel corporation display software update released on 23 april 2003 while working on windowsXP andinstalled it.But when i booted the PC the grub bootloader won't allow the new settings to take place.IT asked me to go back to the old setting which was working.
how can i apply the new settings to the pc ?
