Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Boot from SATA with pci adapter

Found some old threads on this, but they were not conclusive.

Is it possible to boot from a SATA drive connected thru a PCI adapter?

I my case, it is an Abit KR7 MB / athlon 2400XP with a Promise TX4302 SATA controller card.

thanks

I think that it is possible. You would have to see if your BIOS supports booting off of daughter cards. My bios (DFI Lanparty BIOS) allows this.

So far, so good.
I just put the card in my P3 box and installed Ubuntu. Promise controller + SATA Drive--all worked perfectly. After I get it in the main machine, I should post a success story??

All working on the main machine. The one hitch is that--to set up the card with Windows, you need a floppy. The Promise CD has all the instructions for making a floppy. The utility of course will run only on Windows.
So now I have to install Windows to make a driver floppy to install Windows .....recursion is nice in acronyms, but in this case does not work too well...

One more example of how Linux is better......

You could try running the floppy maker in WINE perhaps?

Actually, in Knoppix, it starts to run and then hangs. (I suspect Knoppix has WINE installed by default, but I have not had time to look into it.)

I probably will need to figure which files go on the floppy and do it my hand. Curious to see if Promise will tell me what I need to know.

Interesting aside---manay Promise products advertise Linux support--but not this one...

All of these problems might be an indication as to why...
