bluetoothctl can't find keyboard on certain computer

I have a media machine in my living room running Debian Unstable. I am trying to run it with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse so I don't have USB cables on my floor. The mouse is found and pairs just fine, but I cannot get the computer to find my keyboard. I have 2 designed for IPhone use. They work just fine with my laptop and other desktops running Sid, and also with android. I have also tried re-positioning the keyboard, dongle, and changing out usb dongles on the machine. It just seems to be keyboards this computer doesn't like. Any suggestions on what else I can try to get my keyboards to work?
