Bluetooth Keyboard - Logitech Edge

This used to work so well... it's hardly worked for the past six months.

Used to be it worked fine natively in 'direct' mode. I didn't need to do any bluetooth setup, I just booted and it worked in BIOS and in Debian.

Then one day after a dist-upgrade it quit. I fussed with it for two days, finally installing the Bluez software and trying to make it work as a true bluetooth keyboard/mouse. That's how it's been for six months.

Now it quit again. when I boot it works fine in BIOS, but not in KDM. I unplug the dongle, replug, and hardware pair and then it works in KDM to log in (both keyboard and mouse). But once in KDE the mouse works and keyboard does not. There are no errors in the system log, only:

And here's the kicker: I plug in my PS2 keyboard and it doesn't work either! I am dead in the water.

OK I've managed to get the PS2 keyboard working again.

For the Logitech I've upgraded the firmware in the BT dongle, and now it works in BIOS but not when X gets started. Doesn't work in KDM or KDE. Won't even hardware pair while X is running, but will when shut down.
