Blank Screen on Startx with Slackware 10.1

Hi everyone!

I downloaded slackware 10.1 (two CD's) and installed basically everything. The install went through perfectly and I restarted, first finding that Lilo was not installed. So I booted in with CD1 and installed lilo through there. So that was the only little problem I had.

Then, being used to fedora, I preferred to edit my main configurations through X. So I proceeded to type in startx and then hit enter. A bunch of stuff came up that looked like loading X (but X never actually loaded), and then the screen flickered and became blank (black colored).

I tried editing the X config with xorgcfg and setting it to what I thought were my settings but it still has the error.

My monitor is a

and my Video Card is an MGA G200 AGP (matrox) which I could not find on the list of video cards for the configuration. So I left that blank and changed the monitor settings. Still, the same error.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this and why I am getting the problem? X loads fine with knoppix and (used to) with fedora. Is there any way I can copy the xorgconf from knoppix or something so that it works?

Thanks :)

Run /usr/X11R6/bin/xorgconfig at the command line. Answer the questions about your mouse and keyboard. When you get to the monitor section, choose the option where it lets you enter your own refresh rates. Use the ones for your monitor. When you get to the part where you pick your AGP card, pick number 17, it looks like this: 17 ** Matrox Graphics (generic) [mga] . That should get X up for you. You can look though the AGP listings and see if there is an exact listing for your card.

Thanks for the response! I did as you directed and I am still having the exact same problem

Thanks!

Can you post the error message? Also if Knoppix uses xorg, that config should work.

Got it fixed! My solution was to copy the contents of xfree86conf-4 in knoppix (once knoppix loaded x) to the xorg.conf file for slackware. Worked great :)

Thanks!
