Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

black screen (of death ?)

What would cause the screen to go black, and just stay like that, during the installation of Mandrake 9.0 ?

More specifically, this happens when the installation process requires setting up the resolution.
When the resolution is chosen, and the "Ok" button is pushed, then the screen goes black and that's it.

Different resolution settings, graphic cards and monitors have been tried, but the problem remains.

hardware support i guess. you can skip that first during install and figure out what to do once you are able to login and check your system.
