Bizzare graphics glitch with ati, any distro, any game

Hi all,

I have been messing around with linux for a while now, trying different distro's and exploring the unix filesystem etc. I now want to move over from windows to linux as my main system however I cannot get any games to work (games documented as working with wine).

I have an ATI Radeon X1950XTX and the games work fine within windows, but when I attempt to launch them via wine in any linux distro I have tried (Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Fedora, Debian) this is what I see...

Using World of Warcraft as an example.

(Windowed mode)

I have had to take the above pictures with a camera as when I print screen, I get...

I have tried with the latest ATI catalyst drivers and distro provided ones, none of them make a difference

glxinfo reports direct rendering: yes and fglrxinfo reports what it should also.

Maybe someone here has some idea what might be wrong?

Thanks

Can you change the resolution of your desktop to the resolution used by the WoW client ? Before you start WoW I mean ? I'm no wine expert, but it's the first thing I would try. Let us know how it works out....

Thanks for the reply budword.

I looked in WoW's config and found its trying to use the resolution 1024x768 at 60hz, I set my desktop to that and it's still the same unfortunately

I should also mention in the games settings file I can swap between Direct3D and OpenGL, both have the same problem.

I happen to have the same problem. I haven't tried a bunch of programs to see if it does the same, but MythTV has the same glitch.

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1950 pro, running the latest proprietary drivers from ATI.

Good to know, I have searched high and low on the web for similar problems but could not find anything .

Any X1950 users here without the problem?

Reinstalling Catalyst Drivers 8.5 (instead of 8.8) seems to have done the trick for me.

These problems are described on phoronix. Click on AMD/ATI Linux and look through problems on catalyst 8.8 along with many others. Search on "checkerboard of doom".

I'm not sure if problem is same for everyone as I don't have other people video cards. For me with 780G (integrated HD3200) there is problems with Catalyst 8.6-8.8 when using mythtv, wine, and some others. Glxinfo segfaults. 8.5 works OK but I sometimes have crashes with mythtv and xine.

The open source drivers for me work even poorer than catalyst 8.5. I'm not sure with your card.
