Big Kernel Trouble on Linux Install.....

Hi all,

I have recently started to encounter problems with a pc i have just built. I tried to load mandrake 8.3 ( its the only mandrake I got ) and almost immiediately after about 10 seconds of loading it says.

RAMDISK: Compressed image found at Block 0
Uncompressing.................................................................<3>crc errordone.
Freeing initrd memory 595k freed
KERNEL PANIC: VFC: Unable to mount root fs on 01:03

Then upon loading RH8 I get,

crc error <6> Freeing initrd memory :2864k freed.

Any ideas ???

I thought it may be a hardrive problem but later found that to be wrong.

Thanks in advance...

try booting from knoppix CD first, it would give an idea if your system is easy to config in linux

Hardware layout

Before I list my hardware, this pc did have windows & Linux on it not too long ago. The problem has only just raised its ugly heid.

Graphic: Ge Force2 mmx400 64MB AGP
Sound card: SoundBlaster
Chip: AMD Athlon 1700XT ( i think )
HD: SeaGate 20GB

I had Windows installed and all was fine, then it would not boot ( Blue Screen of Death ) and so on. Then I did a clean install of windows and I got errors straight away, Cabinet files missing ???. I then did the Linux install and got the above errors..

Please help

I rememberd that my CPU was burned and got lot's of error messages. ZIP/ARJ fail CRC as well.

Are you sure that your CPU and RAM are fine?

?

All I know is that when I looked at the memory situation in windows it looked fine. I hope it aint the chip or memory, as I just bought the 2 of them less than a year ago

Is there any way of checking the chip situation ? ? ?

Since my first post I have stripped the system down and rebuilt. It made no difference, hmmmm, I then done a RHL8 install command line, linux nodeps and that worked fine. I then formatted again and tried a normal install, Worked fine ? . I am about to format again and try putting windoze back on, before I shrink it and put Linux back on....

Keep in touch.
