BIG BIG PROBLEM with nvidia driver for linux x86

I am currently using Kubuntu and when I install My nvidia drivers for the geforce fx series keep giving me problems, I have someone working on it now and he is absolutely stumped and has never seen this problem before, my nvidia drivers just will not run, it doesn't want to. i don't know how to explain it but whenever we try to start the computer it just gives us as my friend calls it the blinking light of death, it's the black screen with a dash blinking. the only way the computer will run is if the graphics card doesn't.

to explain things more when it's installed and it tries to run it shows the load bar for kubuntu then it acts like it's going to start up then it goes back to a kubuntu bar in black then gives me the black sreen with the one sole blinking dash.

Exactly which driver is your nvidia driver? Is it from Ubuntu repositories or from Nvidia site.
You could return to using Linux drivers by booting into single user mode and editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the nv driver instead of the nvidia driver in the device section at any time also.

It seems X Window System can not figure out the correct modelines on its own for the desire resolution and refresh rate. I suggest use the utility gtf to help create modelines for the desire resolution and refresh rate. Then put them in the monitor section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Then restart runlevel 5.

The so called "Blinking Light of Death" is not a bad thing. Linux still works, it just X Window System can not detect the correct settings, so it goes into an endless loop until something works or it just goes to the console. Usually the blinking dash means X Window System has crash because it gave up trying.

Usually tty7 is for GUI on most distributions which is CTL+ALT+F7. If you hit CTL+ALT+F1...6, it will go to the console.

If you want to know more what X Window System is doing while it is loading, read through /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Also check /var/log/kdm.log for error messages. Problems starting the display manager can also produce the blink of death.
