Best open source graphic hardware
I am currently using a NVidia Geforce GTX 550 Ti under Archlinux.
I plan to use Parabola GNU Linux instead of Archlinux.
In order to achieve this, I need the best open source graphical hardware option.
NVidia support with Nouveau is not perfect especially in 3D. I experienced some lag and display bug.
I read AMD/ATI support is not perfect too.
I know this problem is due to the closed source and the politic of both NVidia and AMD.
I read good feedback regarding Intel. So why not buying a processor which support HD4000 like a Core i3 3225.
Which one is the best ? Intel ? NVidia ? ATI ?
What is the involvement of each company in open source drivers ?
Which one have the best performances ?
Thanks in advance
ATM I mostly have ATI/AMD cards, and the OSS driver works well. Gaming isn't a priority though.
On the only intel card I have, I experience some weird issues (mostly related ro RandR), but it's a pretty old GMA4500, so you should be fine with their HD4000 series.
Personally I like ATI, but pragmatically Intel is a better choice if you want to go full OSS.
If gaming is to be supported on your machine I wouldn't consider the Intel video devices an option, unless you restrict yourself to older games or low video settings. That hardware is nowhere even near the performance region of your Geforce card.
Thanks to your feedback.
I consider I have my answer.
