Post best linux distribution to install a software modem


i tried to install a software modem in fedora and slackware distributions.. but it was not all detecting the modem.. how is a modem detected.. what are the procedures to be done to make the modem detect. Also, which is the best distribution that can be used to install this software modem.. please help..

Hi,
This has not much to do with your choice of distribution, you can technically use a modem in any distribution... even if some distro makes the setup simpler...
Having your modem working in linux depends mostly on your modem (hardware, software, etc...). I guess it is not hardware but there are plenty of help on the internet for that... first check what modem you have and try to see if someone got it work under linux... under whatever distro... it's a good starting point...
I got a modem working on a toshiba laptop very easily... (under debian)

If it is a software modem there is a good chance it is a winmodem. If so linux support is very spotty and you may have to search for drivers for it. Do a search on the forum and you will find plenty of threads. That being said, Xandros worked out of the box on my Toshiba laptop. You might try that.

check if its an hsf modem... dont remember how but google... its not hard to do... and if it is... message me... i can send you the proper drivers...
