Best general purpose Video Card

I have an old ATI video card that has never given good service (the X display was always a little fuzzy) under Linux and would like to update it and buy a newer one.

The monitor I use is a Sony 19" triniton @85Hz and I will probably use either Knoppix, for now, or a little later on Suse.

I am not interested in gaming, just in getting a cristal sharp X display without having to install any other drivers, etc. It needs to run out of the box.

Any suggestions?

Tim

My nvidia card works really well with the XFree nv driver in 2D. And the door to 3D remains open with their own driver.

I have an ATI radeon 9000. it is a not too expensive card(+/- 80 euro at the time i bought it), but it still provides very good 3D performance.
It runs 2D out of the box, for 3D you will need their own driver
