best distrubution for Quad 2.5 ppc?

Hi

I am interested in setting up a Linux boot partion on a Mac Quad 2.5 PPC Power Pc
250 gb sata 2 boot drive
4.5 gb 533 ram
Highpoint RocketRaid 2320 running 4 75gb Raptors in Raid 0

My goal is to set up a dedicated halflife server. Which distribution should I get?
Where is the best/most current source for the distribution?

i think most up-to-date distributions will work fine for that and therefore it is just a matter of personal preference. Since you are new to linux i would suggest you try something like ubuntu, debian or maybe gentoo if you feel up to it. If i was creating a halflife server i would probably go for gentoo but it is a bit more complicated to install for a newbie. all of these can be found at distrowatch. They are listed on the side. it will show you recent version of each distro and will link you to the distro's website for the most recent download.

picked debian

Hi,

Thank you kindly for your input.

In the meantime, I did a little more research and picked Debian. Hopefully, this won't be as severe a transition as for some as I do have some Darwin terminal command line experience under my belt. I also administer Mac OS X server (albeit at a basic level)
from the same workstation(different partition). I downloaded, using p2p, a Debian/PowerPC Serge distribution (2.4.0.2) From reading the directions, I gather that my Quad G-5 will use the Power 4 (Kernel)? Looking ahead, it seems to me that I will be needing to recompile the kernel to recognize my hardware's multiple CPU’s. That seems to be documented well (knock on wood) What doesn't seem to be as well documented, however, is the creation of a physical boot/installation CD from the distribution files. I know how to use OS X's disk utility but my setup instructions refer to a root. bin image that I cannot find in/on the virtual cod. I have a tools folder and an installation folder and a power 4 folder that seem to be the places to look, but no dice. The installation instruction footnotes actually fess up to being not fully updated as far as PPC is concerned and give a link for newer ones but the links make you download a whole different CD. Does anyone have a link just to the text of the most updated install instructions for PPC and/ or identify the actual file name(s) of the boot image I need to burn. Also now that I have picked my distribution, should I switch to a different forum?
I picked hardware as it seemed the most unified pre distribution pick, but I noticed there is a Debian specific sub forum. I do not want to cross post so should I close this thread and repost in the other forum?

Admin, please close thread.

hi,

As no one has responded to this post in awhile I decided to move it to the Debian Distribution Forum. Hopefully, an admin will close the thread so no cross posting issues will arrise.
