Best Data 56SPX-2 modem

Installed this modem today. Upon first boot Linux found it, and configured it. Went into KPPP, and set it up. Worked great untill i shutdown computer. Restarted awhile later, and no go. KPPP responded that /dev/modem cound not be found. Went back into KPPP setup and tryed all of the listed devices. Still no go. UNABLE TO OPEN MODEM. Need help.
Using Windoz to post this.

Failed to mention.
I'm running FC3, kernel 2.6.9-1.667
I think it might be a configuration problem.
Can anyone tell me which config files i should be looking into?
Come on guys, i'm still using WINDOZE to post!!!!!!!!!!

I don't remember what FC3 names the serial ports, but can you try using /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 instead of /dev/modem?

My guess is that after booting your machine the /dev/modem link became invalid. What com port is the modem physically connected to?

BIOS sets it up at 03F8 IRQ 4
Windoze sees it as Com 1, same address and IRQ
I setup kppp to point to /dev/ttyS0, when i Querry Modem sometimes it says "unable to create modem lock file", and other times it says "unable to open modem".
If i go back to the main kpp screen and click connect, it will hang on "Modem Ready".

I have a CD version of Knoppix ver 3.6.
I tried it to check the modem, and everything is fine, i'm using it to post this.
It also uses kppp to set up the modem, and i had no problems at all.
Could it be a bug in FC3, ver 2.6.9?????

Good news.
Finally got kppp to do its' thing.
Tried re-installing FC3, this time without the modem attached.
After the install i hooked it back up, and at first kppp couldn't find it.
Until i opened a terminal as root, and ran kppp from there.
Then it started working.
Must be a permission thing.
Now i no longer have to run kppp from a terminal, just straight off the desktop.
Thanks everyone for their input.

for starters i just got one quick questions for ya......

are there 2 phone line jacks on the back of your modem .... or one?

(the newer version has 2... the older only has one)

thanks for your time

first, my modem only has one phone jack, but i really don't think that has anything to do with your problem.
Why don't you try disconnecting your modem from the computer, and rebooting Slackware. If your system is like FC3, you'll see a dialog screen telling you that a device has been removed from your system. Select the option to completely remove the configuration for that device. Then shut down the system and hook your modem back up. This time you'll see a new device found, go ahead and let it be configured. It might be that your older configuration is just not quite right for the new modem.

hiya....

thanks for replying.
first- i don't think it has anything to do with there being 2 phone jacks on the back of the newer versions of this modem. i'm beginning to think that on the newer versions they changed something under the hood and it ended up breaking support for linux. i've tried the modem under 2 different distros now (slackware 10 and knoppix 3.4) and it doesn't work with neither of them. both time out.
slackware and FC 3 are differnet from eachother. you do the configurations yourself in slackware. there is no 'auto- setup'
BUT- i tried your idea just to see and there is no difference- at any rate- thanks.
basically the reason i asked you was this- most distros out there are really only based off of a couple different ones mainly-

red hat

debian

suse

slackware

mandrake (though i know mandrake started from red hat- i hear it's kinda gone in it's own direction now...)

there's a couple others... but these are the main ones. slackware's -slackware... knoppix is basically debian... FC 3 is basically red hat. i thought if you had the newer versionof the modem then i'd know that at least on SOME versions of linux this newer modem will work and/or i could maybe find out what your setting are at and see if i could get the thing going. but alas... no such luck (lol) thanks anyhow. - the older version (the one you have) work really well by the way.

thanks again......
