Best 2D Card To Drive Flat Panel In DVI Mode?

I just bought my first flat panel LCD monitor and found out that my video card (Matrox G550) can't be used with the Xfree86/Xorg servers to drive a flat panel in DVI mode. Analog mode works but looks rather poor.

So, I'm in the market for a new video card. I'm not a gamer. I bought the G550 for its 2D ability. I want excellent 2D ability; I don't really care about 3D for games; I want it to work with the Xorg server in DVI mode.

Any suggestions?

(The G550 was the last Matrox card to work reliably with open source drivers; the Matrox forums are full of unhappy Linux users who've purchased their new cards. So, I'm not going there. And, yes. Matrox offers a beta driver that is supposed to make the 550 work in DVI mode with XFree86. I tired it with the current Xorg release: No go.)

What do you require of the card? (res, etc. . .)
Because a cheap radeon could do the trick and work well at that.

I have a matrox 550, and had the same problems you mention. LIke you, I will never buy another Matrox product. However, I finally got dvi output to work by inserting the following in my XFConfig-4:

Section "Device"
Identifier "matrox g550"
Driver "mga"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "Matrox G550"
Option "DigitalScreen1" "yes"

I doubt this works for everyone, but after 5 seconds or so after starting x I get a screen through dvi.

Good luck
