belkin f5d7000 drops wireless connection
 

Hi,

I have a belking f5d7000 wireless card. I have been using it for a while but it has a nasty habit of dropping the connection. I was initially running this card on Debian, but now am running freeBSD where the problem is a bit more pronounced. It is annoying because I use this computer as a headless server and when it goes down I have to go and sort it blind by hand sat in front of it.

To get the network back up I have to either reboot the router or restart the network interface/dhclient. My wireless router is less than great (cheap netgear) and I do occasionally suffer from os x dropping off too, just not as much. OS X also re-connects unlike freeBSD/Debian.

I did a search and found an unanwered post on the topic (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=f5d7000+drops). I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about the cause/solution

I had exactly the same issue with exactly the same wireless card. I discovered that it was not the equipment or the OS at all that was causing the problem. Wireless cards generally transmit in the 2.4Ghz range and I had a TV transmitter in the house that transmits on the same frequency. This conflict was causing me to lose my connection intermittently and the only solution was to restart the router, which would work for a few hours more. When I suspected the TV transmitter as being the problem, I changed the channels to transmit at a slightly different signal, and I never had the problem again.

I realize that this is just a shot in the dark and probably not the reason for the problem you are encountering, but interference is the first thing I would check.

Hmmmm..... interesting you should say that we have been having lots of little niggling issues with this router for the last two years, but nothing significant enough to get rid of it, just enough to make us hate it. We have a cordless phone that was 2m away, but is now all of 20cm away!!

It isn't neccessarily an issue if the OS would reconnect to the network, but I don't know if it needs the interface restarting or if just a dhclient would sort the problem. Does dhclient run in the background, or does it run once?

I will check what freq the phone runs on tonight

The cordless phone in my house did the same thing until I moved the base station upstairs. Everytime the phone would ring, I would be knocked offline and had to restart the router. This is the same phone line that my broadband travels over. But moving it as far away from the router as possible and using good quality filters cured it.
